Here we go again. Another win for Growler. In other news, water is wet.
This week's opponents were FC Old Horns, an experienced team who have bee an established club for a few years. But as the scoreline dictates, Growler dominated.
From the first whistle, Growler took control of the game, dictating the tempo and pinning Old Horns deep into their own half. The midfield trio of Cal, Layton and Miles orchestrated wave after wave of attack, with Max Preston particularly lively on the up front. One standout moment saw Max sit his defender down with a quality half turn in the box —only to show true sportsmanship by allowing the defender to recover and block the resulting shot.
Cal Lee meanwhile, had a moment to forget, launching a ball so far off target that had we been at Cooksey Lane, he’d be facing a lost ball fine.
We saw most of our joy down the left hand side with Isaac humiliating the opponents right back time after time, a few good crosses and shots but nothing to show for it.
Despite our dominance in possession and territory, the breakthrough proved elusive. Old Horns defended resolutely, throwing bodies in front of every shot and frustrating our forwards. The half-time whistle blew with the scoreline still 0-0.
The second half picked up where the first left off—Growler FC pressing relentlessly in the final third. The breakthrough finally came when Layton slotted home a quality finish, a goal that had been brewing since kick-off.
Moments later, Dunny marked his first goal in a Growler shirt, capping off a brilliant run of form that started in pre-season and has carried into the league campaign. A well-deserved moment for a player who’s been consistently excellent.
With a 2–0 lead, gaffer Morgan shuffled the front line, bringing on Kegan, Joel, and last week’s goal scorer Wadams. The plan was clear: keep the pressure on Old Horns’ back four and prevent them from building any momentum.
But football writes its own stories—Wadams, tasked with leading the press, didn’t quite deliver. After just 60 seconds, he was subbed off, setting a new Growler FC record. Wadams is him.
As legs tired, Old Horns began to find space and push forward. A well-timed ball in behind left their striker one-on-one with Dave, who pulled off a world-class save—only for the rebound to cruelly fall back to the attacker and end up in the net.
Despite the setback, Growler’s back four stood tall under late pressure, snuffing out any chance of an equaliser. The final whistle blew with Growler taking all three points after 75 minutes of dominance and 15 minutes of grit.
